Four-Way Coordination Exercise

The following exercise allows you to turn any rudiment or hand pattern into a coordination exercise that utilises all four limbs.

There are 6 steps. These steps are all part of the exercise and should be played one after the other as smoothly as possible.

For the example below we’ll be using a Single Paradiddle. Please note, this exercise can be applied to any pattern, and you are encouraged to try it out on anything you can think of. Eg. Singles, Doubles, various Paradiddle Inversions, Rolls, Flam Rudiments etc.

Step 1: Hands

Play the pattern as you normally would, using both your hands.

Step 2: Right Hand & Left Foot

Play the pattern using your right hand, where you would normally play your right hand. Play your left foot where you would normally play your left hand.

Step 3: Right Foot and Left Hand

Play the pattern using your right foot, where you would normally play your right hand. Play your left hand as normal.

Step 4: Feet

Play your right foot where you would play your right hand. Play your left foot where you would play your left hand.

Step 5: Right Side

In this step our right hand will play the notes normally, but our right foot will play where our left hand would normally play.

Step 6: Left Side

In this final step, you do the same thing you did in the previous step but with the opposite side of your body.

Hope that helps! Make sure you download the full PDF below the image.
